for mezzo-soprano & piano, 3’30”
The text for this song is a poem by the same name, written by my dear friend Molly Moses. I frequently revisit her poem as the seasons change, friends float in and out, relationships drift to and fro, and we accept the present as layers upon layers of experiences built up over decades of life and love. Just as trees have rings, we have our own way of counting. As Molly would put it, we count “humans in successions of noises erupting deep from within us, deep, deep in the middle of the night.”
This song is excerpted from my song cycle beneath the snow, with additional poetry by Molly Moses and Samiah Haque.
